Sami style reindeer bracelets are usually made using reindeer leather and pewter thread. The pewter thread is woven into a braid and then hand stitched onto a length of reindeer leather. The bracelet enclosure is a button made of reindeer antler horn or pewter. The pewter or tin thread can be woven into a variety of patterns befoe attaching it to the reindeer leather.

Pulla Double 4 Strand Reindeer Leather Pattern
This pattern is for making a Sami Reindeer Leather bracelet with a ‘Pulla’ double 4 strand braid.
If you are of Finnish or Scandinavian heritage, you may recognize this familiar pattern from baking Pulla.
The Sami Bracelet Kit includes:
1 x 3 cm width, 20 cm length (approx 8 inches) of reindeer leather
.35 or .4 width pewter thread: Length 2.5 meters
1 x Reindeer Antler button
Clear nylon thread
Waxed Linen thread
Leather Glovers Needle
Fine Sharp Needle
You will also need a pair of small sharp scissors, a thimble, a foam felting board or pillow, straight pins.
How to Weave the Pewter Braid
Cut the pewter thread into 4 equal lengths
2.5 meters / 4 = 60 cm each (approx. 24 inches each)
Fold each pewter thread in half and lightly pinch the folded end to create a bend.
Tie the 4 pieces together with a length of linen thread at the fold. This helps to hold the threads together as you begin to weave. The linen thread is also used later to attach the button loop.
I like to use a foam felting mat for weaving the braid as I find it easier to see what I am weaving and to keep the pewter threads laying flat.
I use pins to hold the braid in place as I weave.
You can use a pillow or attach the tied end of the braid to another object such as the back of a chair as you weave.
This pewter braid is worked using 2 strands of pewter thread at once.
The weaving sequence is Over, Under, Over
If you are familiar with baking Finnish style Pulla, this braiding pattern will be familiar to you.
1 – Over
I start from the left hand side of the braid and pick up 2 threads. Lift the 2 threads Over the next 2 threads.
2 – Under
Then pass the same 2 threads Under the next 2 threads.
3 – Over
Then pass the same 2 threads Over the next 2 threads.
Gently pull and tighten the tension on all the threads.
Work the next weaving sequence again, starting from the left
– Over, Under, Over
– Tighten the tension
Repeat until the braid has been woven.
Wrap one of the pewter threads gently around the woven end of the braid.
These ends will be finished off after the pewter bracelet has been stitched onto the reindeer leather strip.
