Handspinning an EMF Yarn

Hand Spinning an EMF Wool Blend Yarn

For some reason I have become quite sensitive to various electric currents around me. This has intensified over the past few years, so I have been looking for solutions to my problem. There are some EMF protective clothing options that can be purchased on Amazon and other independent shops. I purchased a few and they do provide some protection but they are not very fashionable.

So I wondered if I could spin some EMF yarn and knit or weave my own clothing. I asked AI and the answer was yes. So I will be testing out some different methods of spinning and weaving to see what works.

This is where being a handweaver and spinner becomes valuable experience to have.

The clothing that I have purchased so far is made of 2 layers:

a thin inner layer of knitted silver yarn

and a thicker outer layer of knitted bamboo yarn that is knit in a sweat pants type of style.

I do find that the silver inside layer can feel quite cold against the skin – so wearing this outside on a cold day, you also need another woolen layer of clothing underneath that.

The metallic yarns that I used for this project are:
CONDUCTIVE YARNS:

  • 50% INOX Steel Fibres, 25% Cotton BCI, 25% Modal Viscose
  • 82% Wool, 18% Steel
  • 80% Polyester, 20% Steel Fibres
  • I am using Blue Faced Leicester Wool Roving and am spinning it using the Woolen Method, over the Metallic blend Core Fibres. The Metallic core is usually spun inside the wool fibres so that it doesn’t show up, but in this case I am allowing the metallic yarns to appear on the surface sometimes as well. I think this will improve its reflective properties, to bounce electrica signals off and not permit them to permeate through the fabric to my skin.

I have no idea if this will work so will test and try it out. I have some EMF testers so will see what happens.
The structure of the fabric is also an important factor:

    – How dense does it have to be

    – Is a flat weave, or a textured weave structure better?

    – Should the fabric be woven in layers?
