My dishcloths and pot scrubbers have gotten quite sad looking lately. And I really don’t like to use items made of plastics and who knows what. Recently I read somewhere that you can knit pot scrubbers using wool. Wool is anti-bacterial so it is less likely to get moldy and smelly.
So I thought I would knit one to see if this would be a good alternative. I have a large stash of local fleece and wool – that is not of the best quality for handknits but would be great for functional items such as dishcloths.
I spun some up recently as a singles. The wool yarn is a bit lumpy bumpy but that would be quite fine for something such as dishcloths. The extra texture would enhance the functionality of the dishcloth. I don’t plan to pre-felt it but to start using it as it is. The dishcloth will naturally felt as I wash in hot or cold water, add soap and scrub my kitchen clean. The dishcloths should be fairly easy to wash clean and hang up to dry for next time. As the dish cloth ages and starts to fall apart – it will be time to add it to the compost bin.
I dyed this yarn using a Parmelia lichen dye bath that I had – giving the yarn a warm yellow colour and a pleasant odour.
