We may be familiar with the standard rigid heddle loom consisting of a reed with slots and holes. In some parts of Scandinavia, a rigid heddle with an extra set of holes or slots is also used.

The pattern weft is threaded through the additional top holes, making it easy to pick up the pattern. The standard holes and slots carry the ground warp.
