Semi-Worsted Spinning Technique

Semi-Worsted Technique Video Clip
Length: 1 min. 30 sec.

This video clip shows how to spin a semi-worsted yarn.

Semi-Worsted Spinning Technique

In this video, I'm using a Worsted method of spinning. The yarn that will be produced will be semi-worsted because I'm spinning a Coopworth roving. If I were spinning a combed wool top, then I would be producing a true worsted yarn.

The worsted method is also sometimes called "inch-worm" because your hand inches along down the wool bundle.

In this type of spinning, the twist happens between the wheel and the fingers of my right hand. The spinning wheel is doing the work of twisting the yarn and of drawing it onto the bobbin. I'm lightly pinching the wool with my thumb and first fingers, just enough to keep the twist from going into the roving.

My right hand also controls how much wool is being picked up from the roving and what direction in the roving the wool is going. My right hand slides down the wool bundle an inch at a time. My left hand holds the wool bundle lightly.
